Mathematics

Maths is essential in daily life and financial literacy; it is foundational for all aspects of science, technology and engineering. Maths is also a creative subject and allows children to explore and solve problems and find patterns.

Maths is taught everyday following the White Rose maths curriculum. During these lessons, children learn new skills and knowledge as well as consolidating and practising previous learning in order to fully master key concepts. Teachers also look to find opportunities, both within these lessons and in other areas of learning, to apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt to ‘real life’ contexts. So, for example, they will learn how to record information in charts and graphs during their scientific enquiry work. We believe that it is crucially important for children to understand the relevance of mathematics to their lives.

We have a clear calculation policy which sets out how we teach the different mathematical operations. We use concrete resources/manipulatives to support pupils in understanding key mathematical concepts and, as well as focusing on fluency in key maths skills,  we incorporate opportunities for reasoning and problem solving, often through talking about maths. We have developed a child-friendly document which sets out the ways we teach different elements of maths to help children and parents:

Acorn-Multi-Academy-Trust-Calculation-Policy

We have a maths fluency curriculum which maps out the key facts that children should learn in each half term from starting Reception to ending Year 6. We assess, teach and practise these skills, including additional support for any children who need extra support or practise.

Maths Masterclasses

In Years 5 and 6, more able pupils have the chance to participate in maths masterclassess supported by the Royal Institute. Across our Trust we come together for five virtual sessions throughout the year and end with an in-person session.
